Your computer has built-in protection designed to prevent external threats from moving onto your computer system. The firewall works as a protective barrier that sets up around your computer, blocking these external threats. When using a firewall you will need to know how to block a program in firewall.

A firewall can be adjusted to allow programs access to your computer when you deem these programs to be safe. Likewise, you can prevent a specific program from opening or from accessing the Internet. A firewall works by blocking access from outside files and data requests from entering your computer. An external application may try to open on your computer, but a firewall will block it. Some files may try to move past the security protocol of your computer. An efficient firewall will identify these files and block the path. A firewall knows what files are approved and what programs are approved for entrance. All other files that do not match the approved description are not granted entrance.

It is easy to think of a firewall as the wall to a castle (the castle is your computer). When someone the castle wall guards knows approaches, it lowers the bridge and opens the gate, allowing the person to walk in. However, if an enemy approaches, the castle guard will raise the bridge and close the gate, blocking the entrance. Someone with knowledge of how a firewall works can poke and probe the security measures, looking for a weakness. This is why having secondary security features in place is important. However, a firewall is still an essential part of your computer’s security system.
